TopThingsToDo Top Things To Do • Listen to the sad and beautiful strains of Bosnian folk songs, sevdah.

• Although some are still not open to skiing, there is plenty of sumptuous scenery and pampering on offer in mountain health spa resorts such as Bjelasnica, Igman and Jahorina. There are also several spas in the Republika Srpska area, most of which are operating again. Dubica, Laktasi, Srebrenica, Telic and Visegrad all have natural mineral springs and medical facilities.

Fishing is unrestricted on the coast. For rivers and lakes, a special permit (which can be issued by hotels and regional authorities) is needed, with regulations differing in individual regions.

• Attend the Winter Festival in Sarajevo (usually held in February/March), which is an arts festival established long before the war in the 1990s and, indeed, was determinedly held every year during the siege (the festival is usually bi-annual). The festival is a two-month celebration of worldwide talent and is a symbol and celebration of creativity and freedom within diverse cultures (website: www.sarajevskazima.ba).

• Take a road trip through Bosnia's spectacular mountain scenery, enhanced by algae-brightened rivers, waterfalls and canyons.

• In some regions around Bihac, it is possible to go rafting and kayaking: the River Una in particular is renowned for its clear, blue waters.

• The Sarajevo Film Festival (website: www.sff.ba) is the most popular of all of Sarajevo's festivals. The festival showcases films from mostly neighbouring countries, often neglected in terms of press, but who consistently produce films of an excellent artistic standard. Any visitor in Sarajevo in August would be a fool to miss it.
