About Sucre

Sucre, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is the historical capital of Bolivia and the capital of the region of Chuqisaca. Called the White City, on its founding it was named “city of Silver of New Toledo” in the 16th century. The city is considered the country’s largest tourism center for its checkerboard streets that bear a colonial design that few cities have preserved. Avenues, plazas, cobblestone streets, fountains: all make this city an oasis of peace and culture that cannot help but inspire curiosity.
The tourist attractions of Sucre are religious, public and private buildings, which all make up an architecture envied by other cities in the country. Among the most characteristic sites are the Convent of La Recoleta, the House of Freedom, the University of San Francisco Javier, the Basilica of San Francisco, the House of Government and the National Library. All these buildings lend the city a halo of grandeur and a sense of freedom. Old melancholic streets evoke intellectuality and calm, history and tradition are breathed into each step taken within Sucre’s historical center, where crossing the narrow cobbled streets leaves the impression of a place loaded with life and humility.
