Tourism in Zahara de los Atunes
The first beach next to Barbate is Cañillos, which suffers from restrictions as it is a military zone. Although in summer there is no military, dont count on the proper services and comfort of the beaches. However, the water is clean and the sand golden and fine, and the restrictions set by the army serve to ensure the virginal purity of this beach. The next is Zahara beach which extends over 6 kilometers until the Cape of Grace. This is one of the areas where most of the tourists meet. With a vast swathe of white sand dunes that leads to the beach, it is very open and is well known by the winds of Levante, and, as such, is ideal for sports such as windsurfing. Zahara beach is marked with the Blue Flag of the EU, and in summer it becomes a paradise full of bars and all kinds of comfort. Contiguous to Zahara there is the famous Beach of the Germans, which is located at the foot of a hillside full of houses. The beach does not have bars nor restaurants nearby, as it is more for the private use of the houses, but it is worth going there and visiting the lighthouse at the Cape of Grace. Finally there is the Cañuelo beach, which is also a military zone and where the access is quite difficult. It is found after the Cape of Grace and like Cañillos beach it does not have any services. However, it is pristine, very suitable for fishing and diving, and it also has a beautiful pine forest that reaches the shore itself. In the evening the streets of the village are filled with tourists who come to the beach of Zahara to enjoy the beach bars, and some, for example Johnny in Atlanterra, have Thai cottages in which you can lie back while enjoying the sunset. While the whole of Zahara is full of bars, flamenco, pubs and nightclubs that ensure fun and do not close until 6am, it is also very common to find events that arise spontaneously on the beach and that also form a part of the nightlife of the area. For its classic live performances, we recommend the bar "La Gata". The location of the village of Zahara de los Atunes allows for beautiful excursions to neighboring villages such as Barbate and Conil (getting closer to Cadiz). The Zahara de los Atunes is a small fishermens village, which started to receive tourism in the 1980s and has since become famous. Although on the increase, tourism services are not yet widespread in the village. Therefore if you are looking for a small, typical fishing village - a simple place to enjoy a walk or horseback ride - you will find it here.
