Alvor’s main draw is its picturesque local beach and coastal area, a spectacular yellow-sanded shoreline with alluring cliffs and rock formations. You'll find a number of alluring natural features along the coast as well, including the Cave of Boião, Ponta João de Arens and the hidden Submarine Beach. Back in town, you can explore the Castle of Alvor ruins and two pretty historic churches, Igreja Matriz de Alvor and Igreja da Misericordia. There are also ample day trip opportunities to the nearby towns of Lagos and Portimão, as well as water park attractions for little ones like Slide and Splash and Zoomarine.
What to eat in Alvor
Alvor is a typical Algarve fishing town with an excellent choice of fresh seafood restaurants. One of the region's most famous courses here is the sumptuous couvert, or starter, which may consist of oil, bread and cheese – a perfect match for local wine. A speciality within the area is Conquilhas à Algarvia, a clam dish with parsley. Cataplana de marisco is another must-try for seafood lovers, as it contains the best available catch of the day — lobster, clams, squid, etc. — in a luscious tomato and white wine sauce. For dessert, the beautiful stuffed egg thread parcel, Dom Rodrigos, is a must.
Typical events and festivals in Alvor
Alvor celebrates a number of religious and cultural festivals throughout the year, including Carnival, All Saints' Day, Easter, the Immaculate Conception Feast and New Year. Liberation Day is also a particularly lively event to celebrate the country's liberation from dictatorship on April 25th. For something a little different, the Portimão Sardine Festival nearby is an excellent celebration of food and drink with fireworks and feasts.
How to move around in Alvor
Alvor is a small town with no train station or major bus station. There are stations in neighbouring Portimão with local bus or taxi connections to both Alvor and regional airports. As such, a car rental is recommended to truly explore this region.
