3.8Overrated hotel in Old HavanaElgin Hero - Jan 14, 2017
The hotel location is great, right at the heart of the old town, so you can just walk around outside and walk the pedestrian zones and labyrinths of old buildings, shops and restaurants. The bad part is that, it's always packed with locals and tourists right in front of the hotel for the WIFI (it's not free, but the national network ETECSA can be accessed there with internet cards). The hotel has one old fashioned elevator - which is beautiful..if you can use it. Either it takes a looong time before it goes to your floor because it's manually operated by a guy and it can only accommodate a few, or you can not use it at all because tourist who are not guests of the hotel use it for the Ernest Hemingway museum (it's just his old room converted into a sensation to make money). In my 2-night stay there, I was only able to use it once. Thus, I had to climb the loooong stairs up and down each time.
Not once did any of the staff - receptionist, elevator guy, roof top restaurant - smiled nor showed hospitality. They always make you feel like they are soo tired of tourists and they are not happy with their jobs.
Breakfast buffet on the roof deck gives a view of the city - although the view is not so nice since ll you see are dilapidated roofs. The only thing nice to see are the church towers and the fortress from afar. The food is so-so, and are cold - because they are pre-cooked but presented in ceramic plates with no means of warming up. In December, when it's cool in morning and evening, expect the breakfast to be cold even if you're the first guest to arrive in the morning. The only thing warm is omelette.
The rooms are ok, I love the high ceiling. The interiors make a good style of colonial with modern touch. I'm not a fan of Ernest Hemingway so putting his fake memorabilia in each room is not a good thing.
Overall, the staff service is poor, unfriendly, and the price is raked up for tourists.
For the price of this hotel, I would not recommend it. Go to another hotel in the area, where there's more quiet and friendlier service that's worth the price.
