This celebration marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, as it is used to buy gifts at much lower prices than usual.

History of Black Friday

The term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia (USA), but there are various theories about the beginning of this curious shopping tradition:

The oldest theory of the first use of the term names an American economic crisis. In 1869, "Black Friday" was used to denote the day when two major financiers failed, and later, in 1929, following the same semantic structure of using the term "Black" associated with a specific day, "Black Thursday" was used to refer to the day when the American market went bankrupt due to the Wall Street stock market crisis.

Another theory says that in 1961, Philadelphia traffic officers began using this term to describe the dense traffic and the number of cars and people that crowded the streets just before Thanksgiving.

But the most well-known origin of the term Black Friday is related to the increase in shopping by Americans after Thanksgiving Day. This caused small businesses to move from "red numbers" to "black numbers", leaving behind debts.
