Nazare serves traditional Portuguese classics and the freshest fish and seafood. Local fisherwomen still traditionally dry mackerel, eels, sardines and octopus on the beach. Be sure to try Caldeirada à Nazarena, a fish-based stew comprised of the catch of the day.

Typical events and festivals in Nazare

Although the town sees a lot of festivals and events, by far the most famous and recommended are Carnaval and New Year's Eve, both of which turn the beaches into a non-stop party. In May, Festo do Mar takes place with a procession of traditional fishing boats.

Nazare has its own bus service to connect travellers to each corner of the town. There is no train travel - meaning connections must be made via Valado dos Frades.
