• Suances Centro: The town’s central district is tucked away inland and hosts the town’s main shopping, dining and entertainment areas. There are some excellent hill-tip hotels with pretty views of the area, particularly near Atajo de Fuente de Enmedio.
• Puerto de Suances: Suance's’ pretty marina is located just along the river tributary. A beach, Playa de La Riberuca, is nearby, along with a good number of seafood restaurants.
• Playa de La Concha : Many of the town’s best hotels are located here right beside the beach. There’s a pretty parkland area here, Espadañal, as well as coastal trails up to La Roca Blanca and Faro de Punta del Torca de Afuera.

What to see and do in Suances‎

Suances has a great choice of fine sandy beaches, including the protected bay of Playa la Concha and the wilder, Atlantic-facing beaches of Playa de Los Locos and Playa de Tagle. The viewpoint on Los Locos features the captivating Estatua de Los Vientos, a statue representing man and wind created by Jesús González. You’ll find a wealth of water-based activities and excursions down in the marina too, including kayaking and sailing trips. The waters along the most northerly beaches are perfect for surfing and sunset watching. There are also ample day trips in the vicinity, including to bustling Santander, home to the excellent Centro Botín arts centre and the Península de la Magdalena park, and Santillana del Mar, which houses a spectacular museum and cave complex (Altamira) dedicated to the study of prehistoric cave art. Alternatively, you can head inland to explore Cantabria’s stunning mountains and trails, like Senda de Cares.

Suances has a vibrant food scene with excellent waterfront restaurants and seafood bars. Some specialities of the region include Cocido Montañés (a rich bean stew), Rabas (fried squid rings), Marmita (fish stew) and Maganos Encebollados (marinated squid). There are also world-famous anchovies, cheeses and desserts, including the unctuously creamy Arroz con Leche (rice pudding). Then there's the delicious Quesada pasiega, a cheesecake, and Sobao pasiego, a yeasted sponge cake with lemon.

Suances hosts a variety of colourful and exciting festivities throughout the year. As with many other coastal towns, Nuestra Señora del Carmen is particularly alluring in July with boat processions and beach parades. In August, the town celebrates Nuestra Señora de las Lindes with concerts and performances. San Juan, San Pedro and El Corpus are also all celebrated in the area throughout June. Another noted local festivity is San Isidiro, an event in May to celebrate the patron saint of farmers with feasts and processions.

Suances is not particularly well served by public transport, with a number of local bus routes and coaches connecting the town with larger cities like Santander. A rental car is recommended to truly explore the area at your own convenience.
