C’an Pastilla is a beautiful, underrated hidden gem on the south coast of the Balearic Island of Majorca. One of the first resorts ‘discovered’ by British tourists in the 1960s thanks to its proximity to Son Sant Joan International Airport, C’an Pastilla eventually was overtaken by some of the bigger name locations on the island. However, it is making a comeback.

Starting life as a small fishing town, the resorts sits on the east of the Bay of Palma, next to the island capital, Palma.

One of the reasons for its continued popularity is the wide range of cheap and affordable hotel accommodation that can be found in and around C’an Pastilla.

Areas of C’an Pastilla

C’an Pastilla is small but has a few distinct areas:

• Promenade: The promenade of C’an Pastilla is an important part of the resort. It stretches all the way to Palma city in one direction and to Arenal in the other. It a beautiful setting for cycling, walking, and roller skating. For those who don’t fancy the walk, a mini train runs along the prom.
• The Beach: The town is built at the western end of a 2.5 mile stretch of beach called Playa de Palma. It’s clean, with lovely golden sand and water sports. The beach features the balnearios, a row of fun open air huts that serve light snacks and drinks that run from C'an Pastilla to Arenal. Some of these are numbered and are actually considered to be local landmarks in themselves.
• The Marina: The picturesque harbour and the Club Maritimo San Antonio de la Playa marina is a nice place for a stroll. There are bars and restaurants on the quayside from where to watch the yachts and the sunset,
• Arenal: This is a neighbouring town that is known for more lively options in the nightlife department. It is very close and gives visitors to the resort a different option for evening entertainment and fun.

What to see and do in C’an Pastilla

C’an Pastilla has a lot to enjoy despite its small size. Some of the most standout and popular sights and attractions include the Palma Aquarium that boasts a huge shark viewing shark experience, the BonaOna Surf School and Bar that offers a range of fun surfing and kite surfing excursions and lessons and the Es Carnatge which is a wonderful nature reserve. In neighbouring Arenal is Aqualand, the biggest water park in Europe. There is also a mass of things to do and see in Palma.

What to eat in C’an Pastilla

C’an Pastilla shares a food culture and history that is very similar to its neighbouring Palma. Some of the most popular dishes include frito mallorquin which is a Majorcan take on French ratatouille, arros brut which literally translates as a ‘dirty’ rice and is a tasty meat and mushroom stew, and sobrassada which is suckling pig.

Typical events and festivals in C’an Pastilla

Being so close to Palma, much of this town’s prominent events take place in C’an Pastilla’s neighbouring resort. Some of the most popular and busiest events include festival of San Sebastian in which concerts are held in the old quarter of the city, the Nit de Foc summer fiesta in June and Festa de l’Estendard celebrations for those visiting over New Year’s Eve.

How to move around in C’an Pastilla

The local bus network is recommended as being the best way for tourists to get to the areas of C’an Pastilla and Palma that they cannot reach on foot. The service offers many different lines and cheap travel over the course of a day. Those who wish to enjoy slightly more private transport can hire one of the many taxi cabs that operate within the area.

The climate in C’an Pastilla

C’an Pastilla is a destination that stays warm and dry for the vast majority of the year. Temperature in the winter months dip down to around the 10 to 13 degree mark, whilst the height of summer can bring with it soaring heat of up to 30 degrees. The most popular time to visit for holidays is June to early September.
